Snoop Dogg Album review: Tha Blue Carpet Treatment

Snoop’s ninth installment packs enough sultry grooves that would get a nun hot and bothered. Lyrically, Snoop mostly strays away from the misogynistic material of old, yet the grooves produced on Tha Blue Carpet Treatment provide an orgy of West Coast catchy synths, tight loops, and inventive bass lines. Not to mention Snoop’s smooth, delicate delivery flows over these beats like he’s perfecting a science.

The album kicks off like a Micromachines commercial, with Snoop reeling off words at a machine gun rate in “Think About It.” Nate Dogg appears on the next track, “Crazy,” providing a soulful chorus to run with the playful bass loop.

B-Real guests on “Vato,” which made me want to throw in my old Cypress Hill tapes. Dr. Dre and D’Angelo stop by to lend their creativity on the beautifully composed “Imagine.” The highlight of Tha Blue Carpet Treatment lies within the swinging vibe of “Like This,” featuring a barrage of arists: Bad Lucc, LaToiya Williams, Raul Midon, Soopafly, and Western Union all drop by to create the catchiest tune on the album. Whether it’s the barrage of vocals, the droopy bass line, or the crafty synth, this song is straight ear candy.

Snoop continues to reel us in with his meticulous, riveting delivery with Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. His flow weaves through each track like a hot knife through butter. This newest collection of tunes is lengthy at 21 tracks, but there’s enough solid hooks throughout to keep the heads bobbin’.

Grade: B+
