Get Rich or Die Trying Soundtrack Album Review

“I need you….I need you to hate me…So I can use you for your energy”- 50 Cent, “Hustler’s Ambition”.
50 Cent has got to be the most hated man on the planet. In fact he’s probably more hated than Kobe Bryant and that’s saying a lot. So of course when 50 Cent’s movie Get Rich or Die Trying came out along with the sneaky good soundtrack of the same name, the usual derogatory comments started spewing out the mouths of the masses as usual. The type of negative comments you hear about 50 Cent depends on one’s station in life and what region they claim. People who need to find a reason to hate 50 cent will say “Man I’m tired of 50 Cent..he’s always on the radio..”. NY cats so incensed on how 50 has no qualms in battling any and everyone including NY hiphop legends like Nas be like “Man I hate 50 Cent. He can’t talk about Jadakiss like that!!”. Poor people be like “Man how can he be so rich and then tell other artists they can’t eat?..”.
Naïve folks will be like “Man 50 Cent is a snitch..I ain’t got no respect for him”. Folks down South be like “Man he’s biting the style of the South and making money off it..Young Buck is the best in his crew anyway..”. Haters and “backpack” rappers be like “Man all 50 Cent got is money man…That’s all he got..” (and their point is what? All these artists main mission is to get paid..Those artists who tell you different are those that know they’ll never blow up and end their broke streak anyway). Hiphop artists whose feelings get hurt by 50 like Lil’ Kim be like “How come he has so much hate and he’s that popular?, He’s a bad person!”. I don’t think any rap artist has ever stirred up as much negative and hateful feelings as 50 cent has in such a short time. 50 Cent in such a short time has become so popular and so excruciatingly calculating with his successful commercial ventures and so confrontational that really people are just plain mad that they can’t do anything to him. But what people don't realize is that 50 Cent from Day One has always been about confrontation and NEEDS that confrontation as he uses the negative vibes created by that confrontation to propel him to newer heights.
Personally I applaud 50 cause simply put besides being my brother from another mother, he’s entertaining and irreverent. I like rap beef and rap wars cause they make life more interesting and music is entertainment. When it comes down to it, I want to buy records that entertain me. On top of that the guy is smart and even has the audacity to continue to try and build his empire by adding the legendary hardcore group Mobb Deep to G-Unit (A move that I think kind of cheapens Mobb Deep’s legacy though) And do you know this guy even has the guile to have a video game now thanks to a 3 year contract with Gamer Graffix? And besides the shoes he has, what’s this about some autobiographical book coming out, From Pieces to Weight: Once upon a time from Southside Queens? The audacity of 50!! Even worse for the haters is that this soundtrack to his movie is actually his best work since the similarly titled album that put him in the map in the fist place. GET RICH OR DIE TRYING.
Yeah 50 has done it again. Brought back some of that magic from the magical album Get Rich or Die Trying. In that album we were exposed to 50 Cent’s ruthless ambitions, his entertaining style of humor, his niche for singing yet not singing a chorus and his autobiographical rhymes that really evoked feeling from you. In this movie soundtrack the same principals are here. Perfect example is his lead single off the soundtrack called, “Hustler’s Ambition”. I’ve had this video on repeat in my ride for weeks now. This song picks up where “Many Men” left off and takes you into the present day mind state of 50.
Peep His lyrics: “The drama is nothing, it’s part of the game…Them hollow tips hit me up but I’m back in shape, Pour Cristal in a blender and make a protein shake, I’m like the East Coast’s biggest play boy B, Hue Heffner ain’t got s&&& on me, the feds watch me, icy, they can’t stop me, Racist pointing at me..Look at niggaracci!!…”. Just as engaging is the descriptive “When It Rains It Pours” that shows off 50’s ability to describe the goings on in the hood - “Tell your mammy I catch her in the street, I’mma get her, she know I’m on parole, why she call the police on a nigga?..she just mad cause a nigga’s pockets on swole and when she asks to borrow something I tell her HELL NAH!!..”. Then on “What If” you have 50 asking himself how his life would be different if he did the same things as less abrasive rappers did or how if he wasn’t so famous that people would notice that he’s actually still a skilled rapper. Admirably supporting 50’s reflective style is Lloyd Banks and Young Buck in the somber “Things Change” in which Young Buck steals the show with 2 verses that describe the moral war he endured and lost as a kid.
But of course what really made 50 famous are the comical songs like “Wanksta” with lines like “Back in the day you was the man homie!!!...Damn what the ^%$# happened to you!!..”. So it was good that 50 made “Window Shopper” his 2nd single off the soundtrack. What we have here is another perfectly crafted chorus and brilliant production by C Styles and Sire - “You’re a window shopper, mad at me, I think I know why…In the dealership trying to get a test drive, mad as *&^% when you see me ride by...”. Classic comedy. But the laughs don’t stop there.
“Talk about Me” has 50 impersonating all the haters out there - “I can’t believe this nigga get all this money and still try to say he in the streets telling niggas they can’t eat..You know this mother&^%$#@ went and even bought Tyson’s crib?!!!!”. He even role plays and impersonates his own son on the song - His son is repeating to himself the things that his hater mother and hater friends say about his dad, 50 Cent.. Man I’m telling you this song is freakin hilarious. Equally as hysterical is the clever “I Don’t Know Officer” in which the G-Unit take turns denying crimes and deceptions that they actually did. Lloyd Banks denial is the funniest “Nah nigga, I wasn’t even in NY, I was just on a cruise, somewhere way out in the islands with your b&&&& in the [Jacuzzi], oops, MY b&&&& in the [Jacuzzi]…”. But the greatness of the song doesn’t stop there.
Murder Mase (or is it Preacher Mase?) comes out with the hardest lines on the album with “I don’t know why my charm is as big as your palm or why my diamond chain I wear is bout as long as your arm, you tell me, how many diamonds in my bezel?, there’s one for every time I had to grind in the ghetto, I can show you how to do it, if you’re tired of riding Buicks, I don’t know why niggas rap for years and can’t make hotter music, even when I don’t do it, chics release body fluids…I don’t know why Loon and Faby (Fabolous) won’t just say I’m their daddy…Got as many beefs as 50 and a nigga go to church, could you imagine if my hands was on work??..”. Sick, Sick sick. Murda Mase’s comeback freestyles have really got my mind these days. Perhaps every rapper should start going to church. LOL.
Last but not least you got your straight up ruthless songs on here like “You Already Know”, “Born Alone, Die Alone”, “When Death Becomes You” featuring M.O.P., “Don’t Need No Help” and “I’ll Whip Your Head Boy”. “You Already Know” is the standout here as Lloyd Banks steals the show right from the start and the chorus keeps the blood pumping. Lloyd also gives us a nice pimp song in “Get Low” that is just gritty enough to not come off soft. However there are four songs on here not mentioned that just plain drag. . And worse of all is the "Best Friend" song taken from his movie that is the corniest R&Bish song 50 has ever done in his life.
I cannot believe a grown man actually made that song. I know he did it for sales and for the ladies but please can some of you NY artists have respect for yourselves? Geez. But if you overlook that song and the 4 dragging songs that unfortunately Mobb Deep is featured on twice (50 is really going to ruin their careers by making them too cute) you’re left with THIRTEEN stand out cuts. Not average cuts but STAND OUT cuts. Therefore as far as I’m concerned this album is a MUST HAVE for any 50 Cent fan. Really this album is a MUST HAVE for any fan of good and entertaining lyrics and tight musical production but due to the haterism I’m sure only 50 cent fans will actually take the time to notice the genius that abounds in this soundtrack. I finally have something else I can bump as much as the first Get Rich or Die Trying. And those with the DVDs in the ride you owe it to yourself to also get THE MASSACRE special edition album that contains not only the album BUT a DVD that has a video for EVERY song on the album - No one in the history of rap has ever done anything like that..
